Documenting the improved care and reduced costs through pharmacy services

What are CINs?

Community pharmacy enhanced service networks (Clinically Integrated Networks, or CINs) have been forming throughout the country over the past few years with a strong focus on patient outcomes and coordination of care. CINs leverage their ability to reduce overall health care costs by contracting with accountable-care organizations (ACOs), health systems, and payers to provide high quality enhanced services to patients. These payers measure success and reimburse providers, pharmacists included, based on key performance metrics. Payment is tied to the ability of pharmacists to provide quality care and reduce overall health care costs. This is known as value-based reimbursement.

CINs, common in medical practices, are relatively new to pharmacy practice. By grouping together high performing pharmacies into a CIN, the CIN can directly contract with ACO's, health systems and payers to receive value-based payments separate from dispensing fees and prescription reimbursement.  This is the approach taken by NESP through participating in our CIN administered through CPESN-USA.
